Long Weeknd, holiday vibes.

Long Weeknd, located in a secluded alley near Gwanghwamun, Seoul, well blends a restaurant experience with the grocery experience. On the entrance side is a spacious space with a variety of Canadian groceries that are difficult to find in Korea, on one back side of the store there is a casual dining space with waitstaff. They do an amazing job of separating the vibes - you can enjoy a delicious meal carefully prepared by chef at the full-service restaurant side and then purchase high-quality, natural Canadian deli products - from meat and wine to maple syrup and crackers.

- Please tell us about Long Weeknd.

"We are Canadian Grocerant (blending a restaurant experience with the grocery experience) - Long Weeknd. Grocery offers Canadian groceries, light tableware (Xenia Taler, wine cooler), and Canadian beef and deli products that we make in-store ourselves. At lunchtime, the restaurant offers a pot of rice (made with Canadian oat), served with beef, fish or seasonal ingredients. For dinner, we offer a five-course meal including dessert."

- The name 'Long Weeknd' gives me a sense of relaxation and excitement. Where did you get the inspration for its name?

" 'LONG WEEKND' refers to the long holiday week of Queen Victoria's Birth Week. When preparing a space that showcases Canadian ingredients and wondering which mood to deliver, 'Let's take the feeling of being invited to the Embassy to dine' became an important point in the design and menu structure of this place.' Therefore, we named it Long Weeknd, which gives the vibe of comfort and relaxation (Long Weeknd instad of Long Weekend due to trademark issues)."

- Could you please tell us about some of your menus?

"For lunch, we offer 3 different pot rices made with Canadian oats, served with seasonal ingredients. For dinner, we offer course meal based on Canadian ingredients with Korean twists.

Lunch: Beef eggplant pot rice / Salmon pot rice / Bacon spinach pot rice (Oyster pot rice for winter menu)

Dinner: Cold menu: Options - tomato, red endive salad, beef tartare, or Strachatella salad

Hot Menu: Options -  Chicken Wing, Beef & Eggplant, Octopus, Pastrami Croquettes

Main Dish: Options - Salmon (served with Nutty Cream and Orchiette),  Chuck Flap Tail (served with Seasonal Herbs), Pork Feet (served with Spice and Pesto Herb), Beef Stew (served with Cauliflower)

Today's Pot Rice: Horseradish & Olive (progress in spring) , Radish & Olive (current), Chodang Corn & Olive (planned)

Dessert: Granita (raspberry, hibiscus) , Chocolate ( Rhubarb compote, vanilla ice cream)"

- How were the menus developed? Is there any recipe we can try at home?

"As the number of eating at home increased due to COVID-19, easy recipes such as pot rice and one pan has attracted people's attention. While preparing for Long Weeknd, I also tried some pot rice recipes with various ingredients added and I really enjoyed them. I'm going to introduce   Today's Sotbap (from the dinner menu) so that you can have it if you suddenly feel like to eat a spoonful of rice while having wine in the evening (time for carbs!). It makes a great pot rice with just a piece of butter, cherry tomatoes, and olives (with seeds). It tastes so good with a sip of   wine. Let's hope I am not the only one. :) "

The bacon spinach pot rice that you can see at our lunch menu was also developed from the stir-fried bacon spinach that I used to make as a snack for wine. I recommend pair wine with it.

  1. Fry 200 grams of bacon (cut to about 1 cm) in a lightly-oil pan.

  2. Boldly add a slice of spinach from the top.

  3. Stir fry the savory oil from bacon until the spinach is slightly cooked.

  4. Add a pinch of garlic (for aroma) or pepperoncino (my personal choice) according to your preference.

  5. With a pinch of salt, olive oil, and a slice of lemon squeezed out of a plate if you prefer, and of course, wine!"

- You've mentioned you'd like to create the relaxing vibe as being invited to the embassy  to dine. What kind of space do you want Long Weeknd to be?

"We want to create a space where you can fully enjoy our seasonal menus cooked fresh with full table service, so whether it’s a lunch with friends, date night, or some special occasion - we can take care of you and your guests whilst you concentrate on having a great time. "

- Long Weeknd uses a lot of tableware from Soilbaker, such as the Coupe Collection, the Mim Ddukbaegi, and the Sum Collection. Is there any special reason that you choose Soilbaker?

"I first got to know Soilbaker in March, 2017 while preparing for the opening of Dotz in Hannam-dong. I think Soilbaker products are of great quality and perfect for restaurant use.  They have more lines and options than before, so this time when preparing for the Long Weeknd, I was       even happier. They are light for daily use, easy to store, and dishwasher safe! And above all else, I think it's the tableware that helps to elevate all the dishes and the the timeless design goes well with basically everything. This time I requested a few customized products such as wooden     trays and special plates, and I would like to express my gratitude to Manager Yang Kyung-rin for perfectly handling everything and meeting  our opening schedule. :) I must confess, personally, I love the Coupe and Blooming Soil line!"

Like the maple leaf pattern engraved on the outer wall, LONG WEEKND is based on Canadian food culture and provides sincere food that are faithful to the basics as well as friendly and comfortable services. If you are looking for creative menus, Canadian groceries that are hard to find in Korea, and seasonally driven, ever changing food in a warm and relaxing atmosphere, 'Long Weeknd' is your must-visit place.
